Kiefer Sutherland: 'River Phoenix's Geist'

Inspired by 'Stand by Me'

'Ten years from now some hunters gonna go in the woods to take a leak wind up pissing on his bones'

Kiefer Sutherland has revealed that his late co-star River Phoenix was learning to play the guitar when they were filming 'Stand by Me' in 1986. According to Sutherland, Phoenix would often play the song 'Stand By Me' on set, and one day he told Sutherland that he thought the song was about his own death. "He said,' Ten years from now some hunters gonna go in the woods to take a leak wind up pissing on my bones I bet you a thousand bucks.' And I said, 'Don't say that, man. That's a terrible thing to say.'"

Phoenix died of a drug overdose in 1993, at the age of 23. Sutherland said that he still thinks about Phoenix often, and that he believes his spirit is still around. "I feel like he's always with me," Sutherland said. "I can still hear him laughing and playing guitar. He was such a beautiful soul, and I miss him every day."

Sutherland's comments about Phoenix come as part of a new interview with Rolling Stone magazine. In the interview, Sutherland talks about his career, his family, and his plans for the future. He also reflects on the deaths of several of his friends and colleagues, including Phoenix, Chris Farley, and David Bowie.
